Steps To Using HSA/FSA Card For Physical Therapy Services

step 1) Contact your insurance provider to see if Physical Therapy services are considered a “qualified medical expense”. If yes, then you can continue to the next sections.

step 2) Contact your insurance provider to see if your plan requires a “letter of medical necessity” in order to use your HSA/FSA account for Physical Therapy services. If required, you will need to obtain one in order to use your HSA/FSA account. FSA accounts are often more strict and require this step, while most HSA accounts do not.

step 3) If you are looking to use your HSA/FSA account at time of service or at a later date, I will provide you with a superbill that you will keep for your records in case needed from the insurance provider or the IRS.

step 4) If needed, you can always use another form of payment at time of service and go through this process afterwards to later get reimbursed from your HSA/FSA account. This means you still should keep all documents needed for this process for your own records, as well as filing for reimbursement at a later date.

  • Some plans require a “letter of medical necessity” to be able to use your HSA/FSA account. This is letter, referral or prescription from a doctor has: a diagnosis, a recommendation for PT, and a frequency and duration.

This is typically not needed for most HSA accounts, but can still occur. This type of stipulation is more common for those with FSA accounts.

  • Think of a superbill as a reciept of payment plus medical record all in one document. This document will be provided from your PT that will include:

Your full name and date of birth

    The dates of service

    Diagnoses (ICD-10 codes)

    Treatment codes (CPT codes)

    Amounts paid

    Provider’s credentials and contact info

    Provider’s National Provider Identifier (NPI)

  • As long as the service was provided within the time of your coverage with a HSA/FSA account, there is no deadline for submission for reimbursement. This submission can be sent years later, but it is recommended to submit earlier than later in case you have any questions that I can help with.
